THE TEAM NEWS

GEELONG CATS

  • Last year’s minor premiers Geelong Cats did not get off to the best of starts to the 2020 season as they were on the end of a heavy loss against beaten Grand Finalists GWS Giants in their opening game.
  • The Cats lost all four quarters in an underwhelming display and will have had plenty of time to dwell on that during the prolonged lay-off with Geelong desperate to put that defeat behind them.
  • Jake Kolodjashnij is out for the Cats but the shutdown period has helped them get in better shape for this contest with Blake Acres, Nathan Wilson, David Mundy and Jesse Hogan all available, while Jack Steven could be included despite been stabbed last month.

HAWTHORN

  • Hawthorn overcame a lacklustre first quarter against Brisbane Lions in their season opener as they ran out comfortable winners and they will hope to build on that as they head to Geelong in their second outing.
  • The Hawks continued their solid form at the end of last season to make it wins in their last four matches and they will be confident ahead of this contest having won three of their last four meetings with Geelong.
  • Midfielder Jaeger O’Meara is likely to miss out after he was forced to sit out Wednesday’s training session as he nursed the fracture above his eye but defender Blake Hardwick could be fit after missing Round 1.

THE PREDICTION

Geelong ended last season in poor form despite winning the minor Premiership as they managed just one win in the finals and they started this year with a defeat to make it three losses in their last four games. They host Hawthorn who have won their last four matches spanning back in to last season and with an impressive win in Round 1, they will be confident of building on that and look capable of winning this contest but should be able to keep the score within 10 points regardless.
