THE TEAM NEWS

GEELONG

  • Geelong Cats were narrowly edge out in a thrilling contest against Brisbane Lions as their bid to claim the minor premiership suffered a massive blow as the Lions overtook them at the top of the ladder.
  • After leading the way for much of the year, it will be a bitter pill to swallow for the Cats if they are unable to finish top of the pile at the end of the regular season but may act as a source of motivation to help them focus on the main prize.
  • Gary Rohan and Rhys Stanley are back in the Geelong side for this week’s game but they will be without the injured pair of Jake Kolodjashnij and Tom Atkins with the latter potentially set to miss the start of the finals too.

CARLTON

  • Carlton Blues bounced back with a win against St. Kilda Saints following two games which resulted in losses against West Coast Eagles and Richmond Tigers and now round their season off with another tough game.
  • They travel to Geelong for a clash with a side that can still claim the minor premiership and if the Blues were hoping to end the season with back-to-back wins, they will have to produce a very good performance to come out on top.
  • The Blues will be without Mick Gibbons who has a shoulder injury whilst Darcy Lang is also out with an ankle problem but Jacob Weitering and David Cunningham are welcome additions to round off the season.

THE PREDICTION

Geelong Cats will hope to respond immediately to their gut-wrenching defeat to Brisbane Lions last week which could cost them the minor premiership. They slipped to second on the ladder and must now win this final game of the regular season and hope the Lions fail to beat Richmond Tigers to seal the title. The win is also important for the Cats to ensure they enter the qualifying finals with a home tie and that incentive should be enough to help them get over the line in this one.
