STEVE JOHNSON

  • Hubert Hurkacz produced an upset in the first round at Eastbourne with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over seventh seed Marco Cecchinato in just over an hour.
  • The 22-year-old Pole lost in the first round of last week’s Halle Open as he was beaten in two sets by Portuguese qualifier Joao Sousa.
  • Hurkacz has a 12-13 record this season and the current 52nd ranked player in the world reached a career high ranking of 41st in May this year.

THE PREDICTION

Johnson and Hurkacz both share Craig Boyton as their coach and they will face each other for the first time in the second round at Eastbourne. The Polish 22-year-old is ranked 17 places higher than Johnson in the world currently but the American has performed marginally better on grass this season so expect Johnson to just edge this close contest against Hurkacz.
