THE PREDICTION

World number six Elina Svitolina bested her Rio 2016 result in the Women’s Singles by reaching the semi-final via a straight-set victory over Camila Giorgi. The Ukrainian looks in better shape than we have seen for some time, perhaps due in no small part to her recent marriage to Gael Monfils as an emotional payload we have seen affect athletes before. The 26-year-old is the highest seed left in the draw now and has a huge chance at a medal now if she can oust Marketa Vondrousova, who beat the pre-tournament favourite Naomi Osaka in the round of 16. World number 41 Vondrousova has put a poor Wimbledon behind her with some stunning performances at Tokyo 2020 and was afforded some fortune after in-form Paula Badosa was forced to retire from their quarter-final.

Svitolina won the first three meetings between these two at the Qatar Open and Stuttgart Open in 2018 and Indian Wells a year later but Vondrousova claimed her first win at last year’s Italian Open to make it 3-1. The Czech has been consistently underestimated at the Olympic Games and backing up the defeat of Naomi Osaka with a confident performance against the unfortunate Badosa is a good sign for her chances here. Svitolina remains the favourite as the top seed but take the Czech to win at least a set.
