THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Petra Kvitova snapped her three-match losing streak with a straight-sets victory over Jasmine Paolini in the first round of Tokyo 2020. The 31-year-old is a two-time Grand Slam champion and will always be a contender for any tournament she enters, though we may not have seen the last of her injury issues that have disrupted her summer so far. In her way of the round of 16 is world number 62 Alison Van Uytvanck, who also won her first match in straight sets over Ivana Jorovic. The 27-year-old is better than her current ranking and four WTA titles with a career-high ranking at 37th suggests she has the grit to spring surprises and sudden form.

Kvitova was the winner of their only previous encounter in the second round of last year’s St. Petersburg Open but it took three sets to complete and there is a small sense of an upset here. Van Uytvanck is a grafter who will relish the opportunity of claiming one of the best wins of her career and Kvitova’s recent fitness issues may not yet be in the past. Take the Czech to win at least a set here as the likelier winner.
