THE PREDICTION

25-year-old Greek star Maria Sakkari got her Olympic Games underway with an excellent straight-sets win over a tough first round opponent in Anett Kontaveit. The world number 19 should be considered an outsider for a medal in Tokyo on determination alone but her skills on a hard court are excellent and she will take some beating as a lover of a three-set baseline battle. World number 90 Nina Stojanovic made the most of a lack of Japanese crowds to beat home hopeful Nao Hibino in straight sets in the first round and the Serb has enjoyed some strong recent form. The 24-year-old made it to the semi-finals of the Nottingham Open last month on grass and looks to have settled in well in her first Olympics.

Sakkari was the winner in their only previous meeting way back in 2015 and despite Stojanovic’s strong form this summer the Greek should prove to be a level above once again. Take the powerful 25-year-old to come through this match in strong fashion, probably in straight sets.
