THE PREDICTION

World number three Aryna Sabalenka proved herself a medal contender this week in Tokyo with a ruthless first round victory over Magda Linette, conceding just three games in the process. The 23-year-old reached the semi-finals of Wimbledon earlier this month before losing to Karolina Pliskova but she has won two WTA titles this season to make a career total of 10 already. World number 47 Donna Vekic took the long route around in a tight, three-set encounter with Caroline Garcia to reach this stage and the 25-year-old is part of a very strong Croatian representation at Tokyo 2020.

Sabalenka and Vekic have met a few times in qualifying rounds but at tour level they have one win apiece, with the Belarusian taking the most recent result in the semi-finals of the 2019 Silicon Valley Classic. Vekic’s result against Garcia is one of her best for 2021 but she can suddenly burst into form from nowhere and this will be a tough test for Sabalenka. Take the world number three to win outright with Vekic well capable of forcing a decider.
