THE PREDICTION

World number 29 Paula Badosa claimed possibly the biggest win of her career on Tuesday by beating world number eight Iga Swiatek in straight sets. The 23-year-old was wholly impressive throughout the match and is part of a very strong contingent of Spanish women left in the draw alongside Sara Sorribes Tormo and Garbine Muguruza with a medal looking more and more achievable for the nation. However, Argentina’s Nadia Podoroska has also taken out two tough opponents in Yulia Putintseva and Ekaterina Alexandrova to make a surprising run to the round of 16. The 24-year-old beat Serena WIlliams at the Italian Open back in May and reached the semi-finals of last season’s Roland-Garros on her favoured clay but she has also made three quarter-finals this season across all surfaces.

This first tour-level meeting between Badosa and Podoroska looks set to be an exciting one. The Argentine has a no fear approach to her tennis that makes for excellent viewing and Badosa’s performance against Swiatek was superb. Both players are more comfortable on the clay but there is a huge opportunity to reach an Olympic Games quarter-final on debut here. Take Badosa to win at least a set as the likelier of the two to come through but this match could go either way.
