THE PREDICTION

World number nine Garbine Muguruza has been relatively untroubled so far at Tokyo 2020 with two straight-set wins over tough opponents in Veronika Kudermetova and Qiang Wang. The 27-year-old is part of a brilliant Spanish contingent at the Olympic Games with both Sara Sorribes Tormo and Paula Badosa taking out two medal contenders in Ash Barty and Iga Swiatek, respectively. Another shock defeat came at the hands of her next opponent, as world number 59 Alison Van Uytvanck knocked out Petra Kvitova in the second round. Van Uytvanck, also 27, has been threatening a performance like that for some time and took full advantage of the Czech’s current fitness issues to claim one of the biggest scalps of her career.

This will be the fifth meeting between the two as Muguruza leads their head-to-head 3-1 with all three wins on a hard court. However, Van Uytvanck was the player to knock out the 2017 Wimbledon champion from the second round at SW19 in 2018 and they have shared a couple of real battles over the years. Muguruza should be coming through this in straight sets at her best but take this as an outright win with the Belgian looking capable of forcing another decider.
