THE PREDICTION

This should be a brilliant battle between world number 29 Paula Badosa and number 42 Marketa Vondrousova after both players knocked out pre-tournament favourites to medal at Tokyo 2020. 23-year-old Badosa was exceptional in ousting world number eight Iga Swiatek in straight sets on Monday in one of her best results of her career and most likely the best match she has played on a hard court. The Spaniard backed that up with another straight-sets victory over Nadia Podoroska to get within one match of a medal attempt. Not to be outdone, 22-year-old Vondrousova also proved she is more than just a clay court aficionado by hammering the world number two Naomi Osaka in the round of 16 and breaking Japanese hearts everywhere.

Considering this match should have been three-time Grand Slam champion Osaka versus 2020 Roland-Garros champion Iga Swiatek, the player that comes out of this victorious will be riding an almost unstoppable crest of momentum. At a glance that looks most likely to be Paula Badosa, who beat Marketa Vondrousova only recently in the round of 16 at Roland-Garros last month. However, that match was a three-set rollercoaster and as things stand Vondrousova has knocked out the highest seed of the two and it would not take much more intensity from the Czech to swing it her way. Take this match to see three sets and leave the winner up to chance or pick Badosa to win at least a set as the slimmest of favourites.
