THE PREDICTION

Something has to give in this quarter-final between world number 20 Elena Rybakina and number nine Garbine Muguruza with both players reaching the last eight without dropping a set at the Olympic Games. Two-time Grand Slam champion Muguruza did well to best a proper fighter in Alison Van Uytvanck on Tuesday whilst Rybakina’s powerful game was too much for an impressive Donna Vekic but this is both players’ toughest draw yet by some way.

Muguruza favours the hard courts but she is also prolific on grass on which she won the first meeting with Elena Rybakina only recently with a straight-sets result at last month’s German Open. The 27-year-old’s experience should shine through here as Spain continue to impress in all aspects of tennis at Tokyo 2020 and she should be considered the slight favourite to come through as the outright winner. However, the Women’s Singles draw has already thrown up several more surprising results than a win for Rybakina here as the Kazakh is well capable of blasting through too.
