THE PREDICTION

World number 61 Camila Giorgi pulled off one of her best results for some time by beating in-form world number seven Karolina Pliskova in straight sets on Tuesday. The 29-year-old has now taken out two top 20 opponents this week to reach the quarter-finals at Tokyo 2020 and beating the Wimbledon runner-up makes her a surprise medal contender here. In her way next is world number six Elina Svitolina who is suddenly the top seed in the draw after a calamitous round of 16 for the Women’s Singles seeds at the Olympic Games. The 26-year-old has made the quarter-finals of an Olympic Games for the second successive time after coming back from a set down to beat Maria Sakkari on Tuesday.

Svitolina won the first meeting between the two way back in 2014 at the Wuhan Open but Giorgi levelled things on grass three years later at the Birmingham Classic to leave this third meeting finely poised. Now the highest seed in the draw, the gold medal is Svitolina’s to lose and she has crumbled under that kind of pressure before. Still, she looks the likeliest winner of the two so take the Ukrainian to win at least a set here in what looks likely to see three sets.
