THE PREDICTION

World number 99 Zarina Diyas could be an interesting outlier here considering she won her only WTA title to date in Tokyo back in 2017 and finished runner-up in Osaka in 2014. The 27-year-old is part of a strong contingent of tennis players representing Kazakhstan in Tokyo and her experience could well have seen her shine at this tournament were it not for a desperately tough first round draw. World number 11 Barbora Krejcikova is possibly the most in-form woman on tour right now having won her first three WTA titles ever in just the last two months. The Roland-Garros champion also won the Strasbourg Open on clay the week before but proved herself to be an excellent player across surfaces by winning the Prague Open on hard last week.

25-year-old Krejcikova has a solid chance at winning both the Singles and Doubles titles here in Tokyo representing the Czech Republic and it should take a seriously top player to oust her. Diyas could spring an early surprise but Krejcikova has lost twice in five tournaments and those were to the eventual Italian Open champion Iga Swiatek and Wimbledon champion Ash Barty. Take Krejcikova to win this in straight sets, as she did for the whole Prague Open last week.
