THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Petra Kvitova is still a player of the very highest quality but some frustrating fitness issues have seen her drop slowly down the WTA world rankings. The former world number one crashed out of the first round of Wimbledon, where she won both of her Grand Slam titles in 2011 and 2014, with signs of a lack of total match fitness but to a tough draw against former US Open champion Sloane Stephens. A first round exit at the Prague Open last week is slightly more concerning but the 31-year-old should be able to get over this blip sooner rather than later. A first round draw against world number 92 Jasmine Paolini should be a relatively straightforward one that the Czech can use to settle in but the Italian has reached two WTA 125 finals this season and won one of them.

Kvitova won their only previous meeting in straight sets at last year’s Roland-Garros and despite the Czech’s recent issues with fitness she should have more than enough for Paolini here. Take Kvitova to double-down and win their second meeting just as comprehensively.
