THE PREDICTION

This could well be world number 21 Kiki Bertens’ last tournament after she announced she would be retiring at the end of the year and she will take stock after the Tokyo Olympics. The 29-year-old has 10 WTA Singles titles and 10 Doubles titles to her name and she spent the last three seasons inside the top 10 as the highest-ranked woman Dutchwoman in history, reaching a career-high fourth in 2017. An Achilles issue and the covid-19 pandemic seem to have accelerated her wish to move on and so a strong campaign at her second Olympics could well be on the cards as a perfect send-off. In her way is world number 41 Marketa Vondrousova, who sensationally lost to British wildcard Emma Raducanu at Wimbledon earlier this month after taking out in-form Anett Kontaveit in the first round. The Czech finished runner-up to Ash Barty at Roland-Garros in 2019 and there is clearly plenty more where that came from in the 22-year-old.

Vondrousova was actually the winner of their only previous encounter back in 2018 in the third round of the US Open but it was a close-run three-set tussle that could have gone either way. Given the Czech’s recent struggles, take the vastly experienced Bertens to win at least a set here as the likeliest of two winners in a tough match to call with confidence.
