THE PREDICTION

29-year-old Karolina Pliskova swooped back up the WTA world rankings to number seven after an incredible run from nowhere to the Wimbledon final. The Czech star gave a good account of herself in her second Grand Slam final but ultimately lost to world number one Ash Barty and that could take its mental toll on her in Tokyo. Pliskova has finished runner-up twice this year having also lost to Iga Swiatek at the Italian Open but she is superb on hard and experienced enough to switch herself on and off again in time for the Olympic Games. Facing her is world number 66 Alize Cornet, who looked like she might do something special at SW19 when she knocked out the fifth seed Bianca Andreescu emphatically but the Frenchwoman went on to lose in the second round. 31-year-old Cornet will be representing France at the Olympic Games for a fourth time and the baseliner has six WTA titles to her name as well as three doubles title.

Cornet won the first meeting between the pair way back in 2013 but since then Pliskova has taken control of their head-to-head record with three successive wins. The Czech even won one of her 16 WTA titles against Cornet with a straight-sets victory at the Brisbane International in 2017 in similar conditions to these and her form coming in is very strong indeed. Pliskova should be winning this in straight sets but Cornet has played well enough in recent months to opt for an outright win only for the Czech.
