THE PREDICTION
After falling to a narrow 0-1 loss vs England in their second Group E fixture, host nation Japan face an uphill task to finish runners up in the group, but know that victory vs Chile will see them qualify for the knockout stage as one of the top two third-placed sides. Most worrying for Japan so far has been their lack of quality going forward having scored just once so far in the tournament. Chile will likely look to prioritise defensive discipline and make themselves difficult to break down with a view to hitting their opponents on the counter attack. This could therefore lead to a turgid affair and under 2.5 goals scored wouldn’t be a surprise. However, as they showed against Canada after falling behind early on, Japan won’t give up even if they fail to make an early breakthrough and across 90 minutes, have the superior fitness levels to eventually break through Chile and secure a narrow victory, although they will need to show more of a clinical edge infront of goal than they have so far in the competition.
