THE PREDICTION

World number 11 Pablo Carreno Busta claimed one of the biggest wins of his career in beating world number two Daniil Medvedev in straight sets on Thursday. The 30-year-old won his highest-ranking ATP title last week at the ATP 500 Hamburg Open and he has taken that form straight into Tokyo 2020 with an incredible chance at winning Spain’s first Singles gold medal since Rafael Nadal’s victory in 2008. PCB will face world number 25 Karen Khachanov, also in form after reaching the quarter-finals of Wimbledon earlier this month from relative obscurity after an overall poor year on tour. The 25-year-old played out a tough three-set tussle with Ugo Humbert to reach this stage and he looks back to his best ability on the baseline, on which he must be one of the most frustrating men on tour to get past.

Carreno Busta leads their head-to-head record 3-2 after going ahead with a straight-sets victory at the Monte-Carlo Masters earlier this year. The pair have enjoyed an illustrious history together with all five of their matches coming at Masters events, two at Monte-Carlo, two at the Rogers Cup and once in Cincinnati, with Khachanov leading their hard-court record 2-1. With both players in excellent form this looks like it could end up the match of the tournament and it is incredibly hard to side with one or the other. Take Carreno Busta to win at least a set as the likeliest of two players well capable of winning here in a match that should see three sets.
