THE PREDICTION

28-year-old Marcos Giron beat Norbert Gombos in a testing three-set slog on Monday to reach the second round of his first Olympic Games. The world number 65 has thoroughly enjoyed his place at Tokyo 2020 with a career-high 64th in the world achieved earlier this month following a strong grass season and his industrious, hard-working tennis makes him a constant danger to those ranked above him. This will be a difficult test for Japan’s favoured son Kei Nishikori, currently ranked below Giron at 69th in the world, but he looked excellent in the first round with a shock victory over world number seven Andrey Rublev.

Former world number four Nishikori is well capable of embarking on a deep run here after that performance and he is used to the pressure of Japan’s hopes on his shoulders. Giron is playing well enough to suggest this could go to three, so take Nishikori to win outright here.
