THE PREDICTION

World number Hubert Hurkacz is back in form with a bang after a dismal period following his Miami Masters win back in April, reaching the semi-finals of Wimbledon two weeks ago before defeat to Matteo Berrettini. The Pole took that level with him to Tokyo, where he beat Luke Saville in straightforward fashion after his original opponent Marton Fucsovics pulled out. 24-year-old Hurkacz will continue to surprise people with his ability due in no small part to a very likeable, unassuming nature but he faces a tougher than it looks challenger here against Team GB’s Liam Broady.

World number 143 Broady is clearly several levels below his opponent here but the 27-year-old is enjoying what looks like it will be his best season yet having reached the second round of Wimbledon earlier this month. A three-set slog against Francisco Cerundolo in the first round here showed that his performance was no one-off at SW19 and, although the lack of crowds will not help his chances, representing his country at the Olympics for the first time will mean more to him than most. Broady beat Frances Tiafoe as well as Cecchinato in recent times and took a set off Diego Schwartzman before defeat at Wimbledon. Hurkacz should still be winning this match comfortably but there is enough competition from his opponent here to suggest it is best to opt for an outright win instead of straight sets.
