THE PREDICTION

34-year-old Fabio Fognini avoided a potential banana skin when facing home hopeful Yuichi Sugita in the first round, beating the Japanese player in straight sets. The world number 31 made the round of 16 at the Rio Olympics before a three-set defeat to eventual champion Andy Murray and he should be able to emulate that feat again with a win here over Egor Gerasimov. The Belarusian started 2021 off in some interesting form but it has since dwindled somewhat as his compatriot Ilya Ivashka looks to be coming into the limelight instead. The world number 79 beat Gilles Simon in three sets in the first round of Tokyo 2020 but Fognini should be a level above the 28-year-old at this moment in time. Realistically, the Italian should be winning this in straight sets but take him as the outright winner with Gerasimov well capable of forcing a decider.
