THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Diego Schwartzman got the job done against Juan Pablo Varillas with a straight-sets win in the first round of Tokyo 2020 and the Argentine has been rewarded with an equally winnable second round tie. 20-year-old Czech Tomas Machac is definitely a name we will hear more of in the future and he played very well to beat the experienced Joao Sousa in three sets to face possibly the biggest match of his career here.

World number 148 Machac came into the Olympic Games as one of the lowest-ranked players in the Men’s draw but he has enjoyed some success on the Challenger circuit this season and is a contender for the Next-Gen Finals in November. This should be the end of a first Olympic journey though with 28-year-old Schwartzman likely to blast through this in straight sets.
