THE PREDICTION

World number 24 Aslan Karatsev was assured in his straight-sets win over Tommy Paul in the first round of Tokyo 2020. The 27-year-old is back on what appears to be his best surface for what could be a very interesting hard court swing across North America and Asia. With his first ATP title won this year at the Dubai Open and a breakthrough run to the semi-finals of the Australian Open behind him already, the Russian is one of only three people this year to have beaten Novak Djokovic and that could be very significant later in the tournament.

A second meeting with Jeremy Chardy in the space of a month will be interesting, though, after the Frenchman won their first encounter in straight sets in the first round of Wimbledon. 34-year-old Chardy came through his first round match well against Marcelo Barrios Vera but this will be a much tougher challenge and the playing field is tilted slightly in Karatsev’s favour on this surface. Chardy has played some of his best tennis this year and it would not be a huge surprise if he won again here. Take Karatsev to win at least a set as the likeliest of two deserving winners.
