THE PREDICTION

World number 11 Pablo Carreno Busta is slowly revealing himself as a medal contender at the Olympic Games after beating Marin Cilic for the very first time, at the fifth attempt, to reach the round of 16. The Spaniard is an all-court player of a very high standard but can sometimes be guilty of a loss of focus at key moments, though so far he has taken his Hamburg Open winning form straight through to Tokyo 2020. His next opponent will be Dominik Koepfer after the German pulled out all the stops to diffuse the rising confidence of lucky loser Max Purcell. The world number 59 has been in excellent form for most of the season and as a clay expert his performances in Tokyo so far have been mightily impressive indeed.

If this first meeting between the two were to take place on the clay this would be a hugely difficult result to call. 27-year-old Koepfer has beaten the likes of Milos Raonic and Taylor Fritz this year with a total of five top 50 wins but PCB looks near his best self right now. On the hard surface the Spaniard should be able to win this in two but the safest option is for an outright victory here.
