THE PREDICTION

World number one Novak Djokovic came through a first true test at Tokyo 2020 by beating Jan-Lennard Struff in straight sets on Tuesday. The Serb is seeking the ‘Golden Slam’ here at the Olympic Games and would become the first male player to do so if he can claim a first gold medal and go on to win the US Open in September. With very few predators capable of beating him in the draw, the 34-year-old is the solid favourite to win the final on Sunday but world number 34 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina will be aiming to cause the biggest upset at the Games since [perhaps Djokovic’s first round defeat to Juan Martin del Potro in Rio 2016. 22-year-old Davidovich Fokina won a tough battle with John Millman over three gruelling sets on Tuesday to reach the round of 16 in very impressive fashion.

Friends of the court, Davidovich Fokina is a huge admirer of Novak Djokovic and that respect was perhaps a little too obvious in their first meeting on court. Djokovic conceded just three games to ADF at the Italian Open earlier this year but the Spaniard has improved significantly since then and is capable of making this a proper contest. Nevertheless, Djokovic should still come through to the quarter-finals without dropping a set.
