THE PREDICTION

World number 143 Liam Broady shocked the Tokyo 2020 seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz on Tuesday with the best win of his career to date. Beating the Pole in three sets was Broady’s first top 20 victory ever and was in keeping with recent strong performances at Wimbledon. The left-hander will be floating throughout this round of 16 encounter with world number 68 Jeremy Chardy, who also shocked his higher-ranked opponent Aslan Karatsev over three sets on Tuesday in a brilliant performance. The 34-year-old has played some of his best tennis for years in parts this season and on a hard court when his forehand is swinging right he is a difficult man to get past.

Both players are currently playing tennis unbecoming of their current rankings and that makes for an entertaining tussle here. Chardy and Broady have met once before where the Frenchman was victorious on straight sets at the Queen’s Club Championships in 2017. However, this version of Liam Broady has not been seen before and the 27-year-old’s hunger to perform for Team GB seems more powerful than for himself. Chardy remains the favourite to come through the winner but take Broady to win at least a set here in what is proving to be the best week of his career.
