THE PREDICTION

World number 31 Fabio Fognini is yet to drop a set at Tokyo 2020 with two solid wins over Yuichi Sugita and Egor Gerasimov so far. The 34-year-old is a player who does not need a crowd to get going but he has made little use of that fact over the last 16 months and his last ATP title came at the 2019 Monte-Carlo Masters. Another player who needs little motivation from a crowd is world number two Daniil Medvedev, who still poses the biggest threat at the Olympic Games to Novak Djokovic’s chances at a Golden Slam. The 25-year-old conceded just three games to Sumit Nagal to also go two matches without dropping a set here and his 38% win percentage against Djokovic is the highest amongst the top 10 players left in the draw..

Fognini opened his account against Medvedev with a straight-sets victory in their first meeting back in 2017 but since then the Russian has exerted his dominance to lead their head-to-head record 3-1. This should be a fiery encounter between two of the more expressive, outspoken members of the ATP tour but it is hard to see Fognini taking a set here. Take the world number two to win in straight sets.
