THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Diego Schwartzman has played well to complete two winnable fixtures at Tokyo 2020 without dropping a set over Tomas Machac and Juan Pablo Varillas. However, things get a lot tougher here against in-form world number 25 Karen Khachanov, who was also commendable in navigating through to the round of 16 with solid performances. The Russian had to come back from a set down in the opening round to Yoshihito Nishioka but was much more impressive against James Duckworth on Tuesday. Both players have four ATP titles to their name so far, with Khachanov’s 2018 Paris Masters title the highest-ranking achievement.

Schwartzman leads their head-to-head record 2-1 as things stand with all three of their previous matches coming on hard courts. That is quite surprising considering the Russian’s power and height advantage on this surface but all three matches have been close affairs and that looks the best route to take for a difficult match to call. Take this tussle to see three sets, as two out of three of their previous meetings have done so.
