THE PREDICTION

World number five Alexander Zverev has had it easy up to this point of Tokyo 2020 with two comprehensive wins over Yen-Hsun Lu and Daniel Elahi Galan so far. The 24-year-old should be targeting the quarter-finals here at least but faces a big step-up in quality against world number 41 Nikoloz Basilashvili. 29-year-old Basilashvili overcame a tough second round encounter with in-f0prm Lorenzo Sonego to come through in three sets. Both Zverev and Basilashvili have won two ATP titles so far this season as some of the best performers on tour in 2021.

Zverev leads their head-to-head record 2-1 with both of his wins coming on hard courts at the Shanghai Masters and Rogers Cup in 2018 and 2019, whilst Basilashvili beat the German at the 2019 Hamburg Open in his favoured clay. This should be an intense match with the Georgian a heart-on-sleeve kind of player but Zverev has been mightily impressive so far and should come through as the outright winner.
