THE PREDICTION

World number 11 Pablo Carreno Busta has looked in exceptional shape this week at Tokyo 2020, carrying over his Hamburg Open winning form to the hard courts. The 30-year-old looks to be on course for his best year on tour with two titles won this season and three wins over Tennys Sandgren, Marin Cilic and Dominik Koepfer here is an excellent scorecard so far. This will be the toughest test yet against world number two Daniil Medvedev, who overcame Fabio Fognini in three sets in difficult circumstances and once again complained of the severe heat. The 25-year-old’s tennis is on fire too, and with Stefanos Tsitsipas knocked out on Wednesday the Russian looks like the last man left who could stop Novak Djokovic from securing the gold medal on Sunday.

Medvedev leads Carreno Busta 3-1 in their head-to-head record with their most recent meeting a tight semi-final on grass at the Mallorca Championships. Medvedev was forced to come back from a set down that day but he is a different animal on the hard courts and is well capable of taking this in two. The uncertainty there makes taking the Russian as outright winner the best option.
