THE PREDICTION

World number five Alexander Zverev has a huge chance at winning a first Olympic medal here if he continues his fine form. The German is yet to drop a set at Tokyo 2020 with three wins over admittedly inferior opponents but he gets all the more dangerous with each round of a tournament as he gains rhythm on his unpredictable but highly effective service game. The 24-year-old has won two titles so far this season and he should be targeting a few more in this form ahead of a hard-court swing in North America. He faces world number 68 Jeremy Chardy next with a huge opportunity to get within one more match of a medal but the 34-year-old Frenchman has been impressive this week too. Chardy beat Team GB’s Liam Broady in three sets on Wednesday to back up a strong showing against Aslan Karatsev and the Frenchman has played some of his best tennis of his career in 2021.

Chardy was the winner of his first encounter with a teenage Zverev but since then the German has exerted his dominance. Four wins on the spin against Chardy suggests there is only one outcome for this quarter-final but a five-set showdown at the Australian Open two years ago stands out as one of a few tough battles over the years. Zverev should take this in two but the safest move is for the world number five as the outright winner.
