THE PREDICTION

World number 55 Yoshihito Nishioka beat John Isner in the first round of Wimbledon earlier this month but the effort of that five-set match took its toll on the 25-year-old. A humbling by Aljaz Bedene in the second round seemed to carry over to his appearance at the Hall of Fame Open where he lost to Jack Sock and he faces a desperately tough test here against Karen Khachanov. World number 25 Khachanov enjoyed a return to the world stage after an average couple of seasons by reaching the quarter-finals of Wimbledon. The Russian, also 25, beat a tough field of opponents and only just lost to Denis Shapovalov in five sets at SW19 which should be a springboard for a return to full-time form.

Former world number eight Khachanov was the winner in the only previous meeting with Nishioka, defeating the left-hander in straight sets at the 2019 Australian Open. The powerful Russian is all about defence and that is not a great match-up for Nishioka, whose tricky, pacy game is likely to come back at him with interest. Form right now suggests this should be a fairly routine win for Khachanov and without an adoring Japanese crowd at Ariake Park he should be the man better able to cope with the fairly clinical conditions.
