THE PREDICTION

World number 110 Taro Daniel is one of four male Japanese players in the Men’s Singles draw at Tokyo 2020 hoping to make their nation proud but the lack of a crowd at Ariake Park is a real blow for the likes of Daniel. The 28-year-old will have experienced one of the best atmospheres of his career in this first round match with world number 26 Lorenzo Sonego and that could have pulled him over the line, especially as he has occasionally looked dangerous this season. Daniel made the semi-finals of the Serbia Open before defeat to Matteo Berrettini, against whom he has twice taken a set this year.

Instead this first meeting with Sonego is likely to go the 26-year-old’s way as the Italian continues what looks likely to be his best season on tour yet. Sonego won the Sardegna Open on clay earlier this year but he also enjoyed a strong grass swing, finishing runner-up at the Eastbourne International and losing to Roger Federer in the round of 16 at Wimbledon. Sonego has troubled the likes of Novak Djokovic this year and is a solid all-court player but Taro Daniel can be brilliant on his day and that is enough to opt for Sonego as only the outright winner here.
