World number four Stefanos Tsitsipas enjoyed an incredible clay swing, winning the Monte-Carlo Masters and Lyon Open before reaching the Roland-Garros final last month. However, a loss to Novak Djokovic from two sets up appears to be the first big knock if the impressive 22-year-old’s young career as he then lost in the first round if Wimbledon and again last week in the quarter-finals in Hamburg. A full-strength Tsitsipas would not be losing to Tiafoe and Filip Krajinovic and so the door is slightly ajar here for 37-year-old Philipp Kohlschreiber. The evergreen German has a 5/5 record for the season so far but beating Aslan Karatsev in Roland-Garros was just one of a series of string performances out of the blue and he will give it everything here in his last Olympic Games.
Tsitsipas will be desperate to represent his country well and the Greek has won both previous meetings with Kohlschreiber before now, both coming in 2018 at the Dubai Open and Stockholm Open. However, there is the slightest sense of an upset here with Tsitsipas still reeling a little from his first Grand Slam final defeat and the wily German in good form. Tsitsipas should still be winning this, and in straight sets at that, but take the Greek as outright winner with Kohlschreiber well capable of forcing a decider.
