THE PREDICTION

Both world number 38 Marton Fucsovics and number 12 Hubert Hurkacz will play their first match back on tour since excellent Wimbledon campaigns. 29-year-old Fucsovics made it through to the quarter-finals at a Grand Slam for a first time after overcoming three top 25 opponents in Jannik Sinner, Diego Schwartzman and Andrey Rublev before eventual champion Novak Djokovic knocked him out. That saw the Hungarian shoot back up the rankings near a career-high 31st and he looks set to enjoy his best year on tour so far in 2021. A player already doing just that is 24-year-old Hurkacz, who went one better in losing to Matteo Berrettini in the semi-finals at Wimbledon after beating Roger Federer and Daniil Medvedev in previous rounds. The Pole won his first Masters title earlier this season at the Miami Open and probably is at his best on the hard courts.

Hurkacz is part of an incredible Polish representation at the Tokyo Olympics with Iga Swiatek taking on the Women’s Singles side of the draw and the pair of them are certainly medal contenders. Fucsovics will put up a really stern test here though and the Hungarian was the winner in their only previous meeting back in 2018 at the Cincinnati Open. This looks set to be one of the best first round matches and there is likely a set in it for both players but take Hurkacz as the outright winner as he continues to impress and surprise the tour in equal measure.
