THE PREDICTION

World number 13 Diego Schwartzman comes to Tokyo 2020 with something to prove after Argentina’s number one-elect Juan Martin del Potro claimed a silver medal at Rio 2016. 28-year-old Schwartzman is a completely different player to the injury-hampered Del Potro but he can be very effective when at his pacy, passionate best. Schwartzman won the Argentina Open earlier this season to make it four ATP titles in total and despite playing his very best tennis on clay he can be a tough man to beat on hard courts too. In his way in this all South American clash is Peru’s Juan Pablo Varillas, who reached a career-high 122nd in the ATP world rankings just last week after reaching the round of 16 at the Hamburg Open.

This should be a fairly straightforward first meeting for Diego Schwartzman in what looks a kind opening fixture at his first Olympic Games. 25-year-old Varillas is something of an unknown quantity right now as he plays the best tennis of his career so far but the Argentine is several levels above the Peruvian. Take Schwartzman to win in straight sets here.
