THE PREDICTION

World number five Alexander Zverev’s struggles at Wimbledon continued as he lost an enthralling five-set round of 16 match with Felix Auger-Aliassime just over two weeks ago. The 24-year-old has enjoyed an overall successful season so far, though, with wins at the Acapulco Open and a second Madrid Masters title via a thumping win over Rafael Nadal. The German has struggled in the past with representing his country, too, but the conditions in Tokyo should suit his game to a tee and he will be one to watch if he can gather some momentum. In his way is world number 573 Yen-Hsun Lu, the most successful player on the Challenger Tour ever and embarking on his final tournament before retirement here in Tokyo.

Yen-Hsun Lu is currently level with Zverev on one win apiece but it would be an incredible upset to see that rise in his favour here. The Chinese Taipei veteran won their first meeting at the Rogers Cup back in 2016 but Zverev gained swift revenge a year later, conceding just three games at the Miami Masters. It should be similar fare here with the simple option a straight-sets victory for the German or, slightly riskier, opting for him to concede less than 5.5 games in what should be a procession.
