THE LOWDOWN

YULIA PUTINTSEVA

World number 40 Yulia Putintseva became the latest player to overcome an out-of-sorts Garbine Muguruza with a comeback victory over the world number 10 on Wednesday. The 27-year-old has needed the likes of Amanda Anisimova and Coco Gauff to oust her from recent clay-court tournaments and she lost in the semi-finals of the Istanbul Open to eventual champion Anastasia Potapova last month.

ONS JABEUR

27-year-old Ons Jabeur can set a new career-high WTA world ranking as high as fourth this week if she wins the Italian Open and she takes an eight-match winning streak into the round of 16 after a straight-sets victory over Ajla Tomljanovic. The Tunisian is ranked world number seven right now after winning her first Masters title at the Madrid Open last weekend via impressive victories over the likes of Simona Halep, Belinda Bencic and Jessica Pegula in the final. Jabeur just missed out on her goal to become the first Arab to qualify for the WTA Finals last November but she looks set to achieve that this season if she continues in this trajectory.

THE PREDICTION

Ons Jabeur leads Yulia Putintseva 2-0 in their head-to-head with the Kazakh yet to win a set off the Tunisian. A straight-sets victory for Jabeur at last season’s Roland-Garros and her current form in clay suggests she can take this in two once again but Putintseva is perennially underestimated and the sensible call remains taking Jabeur to win outright.
