THE PREDICTION

World number eight Taylor Fritz brings an impressive 50-20 record for 2023 into the Shanghai Masters but some relatively troubling recent form. The 25-year-old won his second ATP title of the year at the Atlanta Open in late July but he has struggled to push on since, with his last two defeats coming against Novak Djokovic in concerningly one-sided affairs by his standards. Fritz beat Andrey Rublev in his only Laver Cup match last month and an extended break either side of the competition looks like the right decision after a stacked schedule. There is the slightest chance of an upset on the cards for Yosuke Watanuki, also 25, as the Japanese continues to rise steadily up the rankings in the form of his career so far. Watanuki came back from a set down to beat Juncheng Shang on Thursday, also beating the Chinese youngster on his way to the Shanghai Challenger final last month, and he claimed Silver in the Asian Games last weekend in defeat to Zhizhen Zhang.

Fritz should be coming through this first encounter in straight sets but it is hard to predict what level he can bring. Back the American to win outright inside an accumulator or consider a one-off on Watanuki to snatch a set.
