THE PREDICTION
World number 40 Xinyu Wang was two breaks up against Emina Bektas on Monday before her opponent was forced to retire injured, handing the Chinese a welcome break. 22-year-old Wang enjoyed an excellent end to last season with runs to the round of 16 at the US Open and semi-finals in Osaka but she brought a 2-3 record into Hua Hin after a shock first round exit at the Australian Open two weeks ago. With some nerves settled, Wang looks the fairly solid favourite to beat world number 94 Nao Hibino here despite the Japanese’s penchant for an occasional upset. The 29-year-old stunned the field en-route to the Prague Open title last August, also winning the doubles title there, but she has struggled to match that intensity since. A straight-sets win over Kamilla Rakhimova on Monday was her first of the season to also settle some nerves but back Wang to reach the quarter-finals.
