THE PREDICTION

28-year-old Jessica Pegula may never have a better opportunity to win a Masters title than this week in Guadalajara and it is hard to find a player more deserving of one this season. The world number five lost her first Masters final in three sets to Ons Jabeur at the Madrid Open this spring and she has since improved to be a consistent deep-runner at practically every tournament she enters. Pegula has lost to Iga Swiatek at four tournaments this season, seeing the world number one go on to win all four at the Miami Open, Roland-Garros, US Open and last week’s San Diego Open and, furthermore, she has lost to the eventual champion of each of her last four tournaments. Former world number one Victoria Azarenka stands in her way of a second Masters final after a remarkable campaign in Guadalajara. The 33-year-old took out Paula Badosa and Madison Keys before providing the biggest shock of the tournament in ousting Coco Gauff, Pegula’s doubles partner, in three sets on Friday. The Belarussian is the proud owner of seven Masters titles from her illustrious career and she will look a new player on Saturday after what has been a frustratingly poor season by her standards.

Azarenka leads Pegula 2-1 in their head-to-head record and he pedigree at this level and in these conditions, with each of her seven Masters titles coming on North American soil, suggests he can edge likely thriller. However, Pegula is in the form of her career and set to become the new world number three next week if she can match Maria Sakkari’s run here. There could be an extra sense of vengeance for Coco Gauff’s defeat too, although qualifying for the WTA Finals already may have taken some motivation out of the equation. Back Pegula to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier victor, with three sets pretty likely.
