THE LOWDOWN

VICTORIA AZARENKA

Former world number one and Victoria Azarenka overcame a spirited lucky loser in Astra Sharma on Saturday in three sets. The 32-year-old won back-to-back Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open in 2012 and 2013 amongst 21 career WTA titles that include eight Masters trophies – two from Indian Wells in 2012 and 2016. Azarenka also finished runner-up here last season to Paula Badosa.

ELENA RYBAKINA

World number 20 Elena Rybakina looked in great shape after a difficult few months on tour, with a straight-sets victory over Alison Van Uytvanck a superb result. The 22-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 12th back in January after finishing runner-up to Ash Barty at Adelaide 1 but she was forced to pull out of her next three tournaments until a first round defeat at the Qatar Open last month.

THE PREDICTION

We can tentatively expect Elena Rybakina to make her way back towards the top 10 of the WTA world rankings after an injury-hampered blip, with the Kazakh set to enjoy her strongest season yet. This is a hugely tough test, though, against last year’s Indian Wells runner-up Victoria Azarenka, with the former world number one better-equipped than most to deal with Rybakina’s powerful arms. With Rybakina’s fitness still in question this match is well worth leaving out of an accumulator and even then this is a really difficult call. Take Azarenka to win at least a set as the just-about likelier to come through.
