THE LOWDOWN

VICTORIA AZARENKA

Former world number one Victoria Azarenka grabbed one of her best results for some time with a comeback victory over Tamara Zidansek on Saturday backing up a solid win over Viktorija Golubic. The 32-year-old has struggled for form and fitness in large parts of the last few months but she looks in good shape to mount a stern challenge now as a former finalist chasing down one of the Masters events that got away. Azarenka won back-to-back Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open in 2011 and 2012.

AMANDA ANISIMOVA

World number 33 Amanda Anisimova backed up a huge win over Aryna Sabalenka on Thursday with a great comeback victory over Petra Martic on Saturday. The 20-year-old won the first WTA title of her career at the Bogota Open on clay in 2019 before a stunning run to the semi-finals of Roland-Garros brought her to the world stage. Anisimova won the second WTA title of her career at Melbourne 2 back in January before an excellent run at the Australian Open was ended by eventual champion Ash Barty in the round of 16.

THE PREDICTION

This could be a proper Madrid Open classic on Monday between former world number one Victoria Azarenka and a certified future top-tenner, at the very least, Amanda Anisimova. The American youngster is at her best on the clay although like Azarenka she owns a powerful game for all surfaces that is likely to grow and grow over the next few years. A first meeting between the two leaves more questions than answers but three sets looks likely here with three of their combined four matches going the distance. Take that option or back Anisimova to win at least one as the just-about likelier winner here.
