VERONIKA KUDERMETOVA
24-year-old Veronika Kudermetova set a career-high WTA world ranking of 23rd this week after losing to Paula Badosa in the quarter-finals of Indian Wells last time out. The Russian was in control of her match against Dalma Galfi before the Hungarian retired in the first set on Friday but a recent run to the final of the Dubai Tennis Championships is proof of her current form.
SHELBY ROGERS
World number 48 Shelby Rogers beat Jelena Ostapenko in straight sets on Friday just two weeks after doing the same at Indian Wells. The 29-year-old went on to lose to Leylah Fernandez in three in the third round. Rogers is yet to win a WTA title but she has twice finished runner-up at the Rio Open om 2016 and Bad Gastein in 2014.
THE PREDICTION
This is a really tough call considering Shelby Rogers won the only previous meeting between the two in straight sets at the Adelaide International last season. The American will be well-backed as an entertaining crowd-pleaser and home hopeful but Kudermetova is probably in the form of her career right now and fresh from a short second round match. Kudermetova has beaten the likes of Naomi Osaka and Marketa Vondrousova in recent weeks and that makes backing her to win at least a set as the just-about likelier winner seem the sensible move here.
