THE PREDICTION

Two young WTA final debutantes meet here for what could be a thriller on Sunday and their tour-level head-to-head record is finely poised at 1-1 after a win apiece in 2021. 20-year-old Marta Kostyuk provided the shock of the tournament on Saturday to beat Danielle Collins in straight sets and she will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 44th even if she loses here to back-up a strong 2023 so far. The Ukrainian has needed top 10 players, past or present, to oust her from each of her last six tournaments and that suggests she should be too strong for world number 88 Varvara Gracheva despite the Russian’s excellent performances this week. 22-year-old Gracheva stunned top seed Magda Linette on Tuesday and overcame back-to-back Americans against the crowd’s wishes in her last two rounds to show some real grit but there will no doubt be another partisan atmosphere in this final with Austin likely to back Kostyuk extra hard for political reasons. Back Kostyuk to win outright here.
