THE PREDICTION

World number 97 Varvara Gracheva pounced on fellow Russian Daria Kasatkina’s poor form to claim a career-best ranking win on Wednesday, conceding just two games to the eighth seed. 22-year-old Gracheva was ranked inside the top 60 last summer after a strong clay swing but she has previously reached the third round of the US Open on two occasions as a solid all-courter. 24-year-old Lucrezia Stefanini will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 114th after coming back from a set down to best Tatjana Maria, also on Wednesday, backing up some excellent results in qualifying. The Italian enjoyed some strong results towards the end of last season and a win on her Grand Slam debut will be a big confidence boost but Gracheva looks the favourite in these conditions. Back the Russian to earn at least a set, for caution’s sake, as the likelier victor.
