World number seven Casper Ruud came back from a set down to beat Tim van Rijthoven on Wednesday, backing-up an assured victory over Kyle Edmund in the first round. The 23-year-old finished runner-up to Carlos Alcaraz at the Miami Open back in March to prove himself more than just a superior clay-courter on tour, although eight of his nine ATP titles have come on the surface and his best achievement to date is finishing runner-up to Rafael Nadal at Roland-Garros back in June. This looks a potential thriller on Friday with in-form Tommy Paul coming off a perhaps career-defining five-set victory over fellow American Sebastian Korda. The 25-year-old has forced himself into the same conversations as his compatriots Taylor Fritz, Frances Tiafoe and Korda as a potential US number one after recent stunning victories over the likes of Alcaraz, Marin Cilic and his recent run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon.
Sets look like going both ways, and perhaps a one-off on five could be fruitful here, but Ruud has won their two most recent meetings and both at Grand Slams with a five-set victory at Roland-Garros in 2020 and a four-set result in Melbourne back in 2021.
