THE PREDICTION

World number 34 Tomas Martin Etcheverry came back from a set down to beat Daniel Elahi Galan on Thursday to look battle-hardened ahead of this very tough semi-final. The 24-year-old has twice finished runner-up on tour this season, to Nicolas Jarry at the Chile Open and to Frances Tiafoe at the Houston Open, on his favoured clay but his crowning glory in this transformative year was a huge run to the quarter-finals of Roland-Garros in June. Etcheverry beat compatriot Sebastian Baez in straight sets at this stage of the Chile Open but the pair share a 1-1 head-to-head record and Baez owns two titles on the surface, including this year’s Cordoba Open, to suggest this match is about current form over tournament experience. 22-year-old Baez beat Alex Molcan in straight sets on Thursday to reach the semi-finals without dropping a set but Etcheverry will be his toughest challenge yet. Back top seed Etcheverry to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable winners to leave this one up to chance.
