TOMAS MACHAC VS ROMAN SAFIULLIN PREDICTION

Tomas Machac was the man supposed to be playing Andy Murray until the Scot announced he would not be able to play so in stepped lucky loser Daniel Goffin. Machac started terribly against the Belgian who raced into a two-set lead in a match which had to be suspended on Tuesday evening and completed on Wednesday. Machac bounced back in style rattling off the last three sets but that was arguably as much down to Goffin falling apart as Machac’s good play.

Roman Safiullin’s first round win over Francisco Cerundolo had a different feel to it but was played out in a similar way. After losing the first two sets narrowly, Safiullin won the next three but he should certainly gain more credit for the way he battled to victory against the 26 seed Cerundolo.

These two players have met three times before including once on the ATP Tour. Safiullin won in three close sets which included two tiebreakers, while the previous two on the Challenger Tour were shared. So much will depend on how each player recovers from their opening matches but with Safiullin having the greater time to rest and having produced a better display, we marginally edge him. We would also like over 3.5 sets as they are well matched to produce a tight match but this is one of those matches where if one is suffering a hangover, it could easily lead to a blowout.
