World number 34 Ugo Humbert came back from a set down to beat in-form Nicolas Jarry to start his Canada Masters campaign very impressively indeed. The Frenchman set a career-high ATP world ranking of 25th at the start of last season but he endured a horrendous 2022, in large part down to contracting covid-19 at the Australian Open, to need some serious off-tour rebuilding work in the first half of 2023. World number nine Taylor Fritz received a bye to the second round in Toronto as the eighth seed here and he brings some excellent hardcourt form into the draw after recently snapping a seven-match winning streak with a three-set defeat to Tallon Griekspoor in the semi-finals of the Washington Open last week. Two hardcourt titles claimed this season makes Fritz the favourite here but Humbert is a serious player who used to be the thorn in many top players’ sides. The suitably cautious move is taking Fritz to earn at least a set, especially as Humbert has a run-up from the first round, but three sets could be the shrewd move here.
